⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)
BBD productions make their Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut with this impressive late-night extravaganza of the best of Broadway featuring a magnificent 18-piece big band and what a great evening’s entertainment it is.
Taking us on a journey of the great white way from the 1940s to the present day, a hugely talented ensemble cast join together with the unique sound that only a live big band can be produced to deliver a truly charming evening of musical theatre’s finest moments from across the decades.
Special mention must go to Musical Director and co-producer Jonnie Grant whose musical arrangements are the lynchpin of this show, his ability to take songs from Les Miserable and convert them into a big band extravaganza is a true skill.
Performance-wise Katie Shalka’s “Don’t Rain on my Parade” from Funny Girl is a sparkling moment as is Director and Co-Producer Scott Coltman’s “Sunset Boulevard” his is a song that fully suits the big band motif.
On the night of review there were issues with the sound, or more precisely the microphones, many of them kept cutting out and there is no way that a human voice can carry above an 18 strong big band so sadly some of the lyrics were lost. However full credit to the company for soldiering on.
For a debuting company, this is a truly sparkling affair and one which reaffirms the joy of musical theatre, especially when the context is changed and the songs that are familiar are given a new lease of life. BBD should be commended and following this showing, exciting times lie ahead.
Head to the triplex before this short-run comes to a close and get in the swing in true big band style.
