BalletBoyz well deserves its enormous reputation as an award-winning contemporary dance company. There is nothing over-showy or superficial in their work, but simply a deep dedication to their art often expressed with subtlety as well as with great skill.
The first half of this show, Them, is played around a simple, austere and angular set, and the audience, in effect, learns the language of the dancers’ movements as the work progresses. It was devised in what the programme describes as a “dangerously democratic process,” as they improvised, workshopped and developed ideas. They worked with composer Charlotte Harding, and choreography and score grew together.
The second half, Us, was an already existing duet, a very moving exploration of a relationship, created by Christopher Wheeldon for the company. He returned to the company and developed a work for six dancers which gives context to that relationship. This has become a beautiful work, and the ultimate duet is breathtaking and a joy to behold. Watch the rapport of hands here, and also the exquisite interweaving of the pair.
If you are able to download a programme beforehand this will help, as you will then be able to watch an intro to Us in the short interval between the two works.
This is the full opposite of a one-person show. Here, simply focus your full attention on these superb dancers, their deep level of co-operation and collaboration, and their achievements both individually and as a streamlined unit. Every moment is to be relished.
