Agnes of God
Paradise in The Vault
Warning: This review contains terrible puns to avoid strong language.
This is the worst piece of Student theatre at the Fringe thus far. (Agnes of) God knows how they have afforded to secure a full length run with this show. The whole experience sent me cringing as I both nodded off to sleep and laughed inappropriately in a damp and dingy venue which smelt as good as the show was acted. To top off the accidental assault to the senses, it sounded as if the cast of ‘Stomp’ were guest starring just out of sight, but never out of mind or earshot in a room above the theatre. Initially, I was drawn in by the play which follows the ‘story of a self-assured psychiatrist (Martha) assigned the case of an extraordinary and troubled young nun (Agnes) who strangled a baby no one knew she was carrying.’ Produced by BLAC Theatre Company, this show is genuinely lifted straight from school, and in the shows blurb they quote their teacher as a reviewer.
The acting was patronising, they lacked any sense of character and they fumbled over their lines. It was as inspiring as the Times New Roman flyers used to advertise it, but at least they used a picture for the fringe website. Also online the BLAC website it reads; ‘so what’s the story in balamory?…….We’re at Edinburgh!!!’ So I should have paid attention to the signs, which all pointed towards the standard of this show. If I weren’t obliged to sit it out as a reviewer, I most certainly would have left, and I have tried to find the shows redeeming features, but I must confess, there were nun, and these aspiring actors should just kick the habit.
