Simon Munnery has been a comedian of great skill for many years, able to dissect society’s ills in punchy epithets and provide a cascade of fresh impressions. Here he becomes again Alan Parker, the voice of the uncounted, the bedsit anarchist who snarls his way through a demolition of society’s assumptions.
He is radical, but in his own way, and he gives voice to the view from the depths. Munnery has been mining this character for a long time, but then he was put into a kind of retirement. Now he is amongst us again, pouring out the heat of anger that sometimes still reflects the concerns of the Thatcher years, from the time of his original incarnation, and at times tearing into the follies and sloppy thinkings of more recent times.
Many comedians have strong moments and then quiet times whilst we all regather ourselves and recharge our laughter muscles. Not so here. Simon Munnery keeps up the pace throughout his hour. He is relentless, and runs from topic to topic, from one sharp line to the next joke. The hilarity is pretty much continuous. You leave the venue thinking – phew! that was intense. But intense in a most enjoyable and stimulating and memorable way.
I recommend this show to anyone who wants an hour of strong hilarity, and who wants to have any last shred of complacency shaken out.
